Libraries as we all know contain books that are a source of knowledge and entertainment. A Library is the highly influential place for gaining information on any subject. Libraries are mainly frequented by students, researchers, professors or anyone who loves to read. You cannot only find published book works from the libraries but also CDs, DVDs, maps and other educational media. Dedicated expertise, namely librarians are the ones that organize and manage libraries along with providing updates wherever necessary and making published works available to those who need them. If you have always been interested in books and gaining knowledge on various subjects, one of the ideal jobs for you can be librarian jobs.

If you are preparing yourself for being a librarian it is very essential that you get acquainted with the duties and responsibilities involved in librarian jobs. Common work activities include:
  • Collecting, organizing, and managing a large collection of resources to meet up to the book reading requirements of the people
  • Keeping track of people who have taken books
  • Updating library records on regular basis and keeping it up to date
  • Recommending subscribers if necessary
  • Calculating library budgets and developing a list for additional expenditures

  • Answering queries of the subscribers
  • Hiring, training, supervising, and terminating employees that work in the library
  • Helping individuals in locating books
  • Monitoring, tracking, and making a record of books, people, and additional details
Other than these duties of librarians there are others which include reading book reviews, publishers announcements and industry publications so that they are updated with the latest books in the market. Library jobs also include purchasing books from books distributors, wholesalers, and publishers. They are also responsible for negotiating if any equipments, services or materials are required. Their jobs also involve preparing charts and organizing events like book chats and reading events for a better understanding of children and adults. The advancement of technology has led to a computerized database and so librarians are responsible for developing and indexing electronic collections. Their duties also involve in teaching the users of the library about the use of these computerization facilities. Getting knowledge on the duties and responsibilities of the librarian will give you a feel of the duties to be performed and get prepared for the job before acquiring library jobs.



A librarian should have a 2 year graduate level degree or a master's degree in library science. A 3 year high level graduate degree or doctorate degree (PhD) in related field can be very helpful for the career of a librarian.

A good librarian should have following skills:
  • Excellent knowledge of books and other resources
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Good knowledge of computers
  • A librarian should be able to understand the queries put forth by various individuals and help them to search for the right book
There is no formal training for a librarian; one may work as a library assistant in order to gain experience and then he/she may apply for a librarian job in a decent library.

A well experienced librarian would find a place with the reputed libraries. In order to get better pay and a chance to work with an esteemed library you need to have a minimum of 2-3 years of experience.

Librarians could find various job opportunities as various universities, institutions, public library, and local library are hiring them. Many applicants are seeking assistant jobs then getting placed in the higher ranks once they gain enough experience.

An average salary which librarian can earn is around $50,000. For a newcomer basic salary is around $10,000 annually. The more you are experienced the better your salary will be. The expectation of salary is dependent on the type of the library you are employed with.

Librarians are hard to find these days since everyone's looking for high-end jobs so this sector would have less competition and there are many opportunities in this field. Libraries are getting tech-friendly so librarians need to match the same pace. Librarians are required for public libraries, school libraries, and many more.
