The duties of the librarian are different according to the size of the library and the needs of the students of the schools or colleges. High school library is larger in size than the elementary school. The high school students need many more resources for their research. The librarians work alone in the elementary and in the secondary school library. The colleges and the universities have more staff in the library which includes the technical assistants and clerks. In large libraries they have to assist in preparing the catalogue of new books, arrange returned books in the shelves, and when required they repair the damaged books. In the small library this is maintained by the librarian alone.
Many students begin to learn the research techniques in senior and junior school so the higher secondary school librarian has to explain for individual classes about the use of card catalogue, computer database, references and audiovisual materials. This helps the individual to get the relevant information. Sometimes the librarian exhibits to the students to be aware of library holdings. They encourage the students and make them to be happy and interesting. This is the important part of the school day. To make the students interested in reading the books in library, they also conduct the story hour and they arrange a special program for the students in the higher grades. They help the students to distinguish the variety of books in the library. They also teach students in selecting the books in the library like fiction, or non fiction books, poetry and they teach the students to use and to find the books.
